Westlake and Wairau Basketball Coaching Clinic

On Saturday 23rd June in Westlake’s new gymnasium, an excited group of up and coming basketballers from Wairau Intermediate were treated to four hours of coaching and motivation from some of Westlake Boys and Girls finest student coaches. The session, facilitated by Within School Lead Teacher, Karl Jorgensen, and led by Westlake student coach, Cain Nuttal, took the Wairau students through a series of drills and skills training before culminating in a filmed All-Star Game. The session was made even more special given that many of the Westlake students had previously attended Wairau Intermediate. Consequently, over the course of the session, in addition to the basketball, there were many meaningful discussions about the transition process to Westlake, what the coaches remembered from their time at Wairau, and the opportunities and experiences they had taken over their time at the Boys and Girls schools.

The coaching clinic was a great experience; I was able to learn a lot from Cain’s coaching techniques and experience, especially the importance of fundamentals for younger players. Overall, it was a very successful day, the Wairau kids had a great time and hopefully they will be able to use their newfound skills at Westlake in the future.
