“I love being able to see words written on a piece of paper and being able to be like, cool, we need to make this alive, we need to bring flavour to this, we need to add action to it. And just the process of that, seconds before they are going to start filming it, gives you some adrenaline and I absolutely love that!”
Max Crean is the first current Pupuke student to appear on Inside the Career, joining us to discuss playing Dan Townley on Mystic, a new British-New Zealand television drama series produced by Libertine Pictures and Slim Film + Television.
As a year 13 student at Westlake Boys’ in 2020, Max discusses the challenge of juggling his Mystic commitments alongside an already hectic academic and social year; one which has been made even more difficult due to the interruptions caused by Covid-19.
Max attended Takapuna Normal Intermediate before Westlake. During our interview he remembers performing for the TNIS Drama Club and entertaining some of the local primary schools in the area; an experience which he credits as helping to spark a love for acting. Max has continued to grow this passion at high school by taking advantage of the many performance and dramatic opportunities on offer, including entering for the Sheila Winn Shakespeare Competition.
Mystic is based on the Pony Club Secrets novel series by best-selling author Stacey Griggs and began filming in Auckland in January. Commissioned for an international market, it aired on TVNZ earlier in the year, CBBC in the UK and the Seven Network in Australia. It is still available to stream on-demand on tvnz.co.nz.
