“From my point of view, it’s a great mix between science, or academic based thinking, and at the same time having that human interaction; and actually the people you work with, they make your day!” (Josh Chang)
Andrew Han and Josh Chang join me in our first episode of Inside the Career, a new Pupuke podcast series which seeks to explore the pathway options for study and career that await our senior students when they leave our gates.
Andrew and Josh graduated from WBHS a couple of years apart, 2009 and 2011 respectively, and both are pursuing careers in medicine, following completing their university training at Auckland School of Medicine. Andrew is currently in his third and final year of GP training, while practicing in Silverdale, while Josh is a second-year junior doctor working on rotation in the Auckland regional hospitals.
Over the course of the episode, we discuss some of the realities and rewards of a career in medicine, the alternate pathways available in the field, along with some of the more unique aspects of this challenging vocation. Josh and Andrew also speak about some of the ways they strive to maintain balance and personal well-being in their lives, before looking ahead to what the future may hold.
“A piece of advice I would give my high school self would be try to really enjoy the learning and to always ask ‘why you are learning these things?’… thereby having a broader perspective and scope… rather than just ticking boxes to get better grades…because that will happen as well.” (Andrew Han)
