Leanne Hooks, one of our Within School Lead at Westlake Boys High School has been working on her inquiry around student agency and sustainability. Here is a brief outline of the aims and objectives and what the Grow Cook Eat project encompasses.
Collaboration – Working in the glasshouse and garden to grow plants the students want to eat.
Student agency – Using resources from Garden to Table, the groups decide on recipes, work out what they need to purchase, what needs to be substituted for allergies.
Developing young leaders – All members get the chance to lead in the garden and the kitchen. Most members are year 9 and they are learning from year 12 and 13 members.
Sustainable practices – We are always looking to lessen our impact on the environment by composting, worm farm, bokashi bucket (Science staff). Up-cycling milk bottles and reusing seedling pots.
Challenges – students are time poor, they are developing initiative, they are much more interested in eating, but reality is they have to work hard to grow the plants first. Working with the elements on year long projects.
Triumphs – Confidence built, new friendships, international parents can maybe find a niche, problem-solving, life skills, communication skills, fun and enjoyment of what we can achieve.
In 2020, Leanne’s big focus is to involve the International parents too.
