Following on from their hugely successful pilot event in September, WSLs Jon Webster, Jihan El-Labany and the Westlake Science department opened their labs, equipment and expertise for two further experience days in November. This time, the net was cast wider to include a group of 40 Year 8 students from Wairau, Murrays Bay and Northcross Intermediates, following on from hosting a group of 40 Year 8 Takapuna Normal Intermediate students earlier in the week. The assortment of Westlake student mentors for this second round also evolved to include eight Year 9 boys in addition to the team of year 12 and 13 Masters who had facilitated the first event. For the four visiting teachers from Wairau, Murrays Bay and Northcross the day provided a unique way to connect and collaborate, not only across departments or schools, but across Kāhui Ako. One of these teachers commented that the initiative would help to reinvigorate science programs within their own school contexts. For the students from these three schools, the day was as much about making new connections and transitioning, as soaking up the inspirational science experiences on hand.
